One Room Challenge Week 5
The Power of Paint
Goodbye boring “builder beige” paint! For Week 5 of the Fall 2025 One Room Challenge, I finally was able to make a noticeable change to our daughter’s old bedroom, all with a few cans of paint.
Painting is the quickest, easiest, and least expensive way to transform a room. And since this is a spare room that will only see a limited use, I decided to go all-out with the color. I’m not someone who’s afraid to add color throughout my house, but I have to admit this room is a little wild even for me. I wanted to have fun with it!
For the ceiling: a high-gloss paint in hot pink.
For the walls: a slightly less wild green.
I started with a couple of coats of primer on the ceiling, since I knew that new drywall mud would be super absorbent. And then I took the plunge and rolled on the high-gloss pink.
As I feared, the glossy paint shows every little rough patch and imperfection on the surface of the ceiling. Was all that work to skim coat the ceiling worth it, when I couldn’t get it as mirror-smooth as I really wanted it? I’m still not sure, but the overall effect is what I was going for: a bright, reflective, eye-catching surface.
The next step was the walls. With regular paint, these were much easier than the ceiling. The only challenge was to cut in the paint along the ceiling without taping it off, since I wanted to be sure of getting a crisp edge between those two very contrasting colors. I’ll need to do a little bit of ceiling touchup along that edge, but I was able to get nice, straight lines with the green.
And there you have it: one eye-popping, possibly crazy room. The finishing touch will be a wallpaper mural in matching colors. However, that will have to wait until after our family vacation. Stay tuned!
Remember the plain room before?
It’s definitely not plain anymore!
