One Room Challenge Week 4

Now for a Little Shopping Break …

I know I promised a big paint reveal for this week’s One Room Challenge post, but I’m going to push it to next week … mainly because I didn’t get it finished. Again, is anyone surprised? Last week’s skim coating really put me behind my carefully planned-out schedule. And don’t even get me started on how long it took to get all that drywall dust cleaned up enough to be able to start painting.

In the meantime, I’ve been busy with other little aspects of the room redesign, including one of my favorite activities: shopping!

First purchase: a shiny new shop vac.

It did not take very long to get it broken in!

After much searching for the perfect light fixture, I finally found one that might work, although I’m awaiting delivery to be sure. Why is it so hard to find a beautiful flush-mount fixture that actually puts out a decent amount of light? I shouldn’t need to compromise between pretty and practical. I also still need to decide on the light bulb, since the bulb is visible through the fixture. Do I go with the opaque bulb, to minimize glare, or the more interesting hand-blown Edison bulb with a lower wattage? Decisions, decisions.

Next, I’ve been putting more thought into the design of my gift-wrap closet, and have been selecting shelving and organizers to make it as functional as possible. It’s a very small closet! I’m not sure how our daughter managed to fit her clothes in there. I’ll be taking out the current wire shelf and hanging bar and replacing it with wooden shelving, rolling gift-wrap racks, and pegboards across the back with hooks to hold gift bags and ribbon rolls.

Ikea’s pegboard accessories include lots of hooks and containers for custom storage options.

I’ll leave the doors off this Ikea Hauga cabinet and use the open shelving to hold wrapping supplies.

I’ll use two of these rolling carts: one for rolls of everyday gift wrap and the other for Christmas wrap.

I’m still on the fence as to how we’ll use this room when it’s completed, as I explained in Week 1 (One Room Challenge Week 1 — CanCan Interiors). I’m currently considering a third option, to get rid of the existing furniture but replace the bed with a comfy chair that converts into a twin-sized sleeper. That would still allow me to bring in my treadmill and use the room for working out, but also keep the option of overflow guest space if it’s ever needed. And that little window nook is just crying out to be a reading corner!

Could a sleeper chair be the answer to our indecision?

I’m waiting for fabric samples to arrive to decide on a color for this one.

More on that later. For now, it’s back to painting. I’m not even going to promise the reveal on that next week, because who am I kidding? We’re about to embark on a two-week family vacation, which is going to seriously impair my ability to get this project completed on time!

I hope you’ll keep following along to see how far I get. I promise a final reveal at some point, even if it’s not within the ORC’s eight-week timeline.
